The Character Theory

Personally I believe that everyone who says that they cannot come up with characters or think of a story is a bunch of crap. There is creative spirit in everyone. If you can think of personalities, hair, eye color, clothes or anything, you can come up with a character. You don’t have to be good in your English, Art or Language classes for that fact, if you listen closely there is a character inside of you waiting to be put on paper. I have been blessed with a drawing and writing talent, so it is easier for me to think of a character and make that character live on paper. However, I have seen the most unintelligent people out there come up with the most creative characters this planet will ever know of. I believe if a human, such as yourself, is willing to listen closely you will hear your own character talk to you. I have over 200 characters, but all of them have come out of my mind, spirit and my willingness to know who they are. I do not make the personality of the character, the character tells me who they are, what they’re likes and dislikes are.

Example:

Character: Yumiko Hawk

This character took me two years to figure out. Ideas for her would come out of the blue and I would have to write them on paper right away, or draw. As I listened closely she would tell me things about her. I learned she had bitterness to her father who left before she was born. Admired her mother who raised her. She was quiet and did not want to open to others, she was a wanderer and wished to become more powerful with each passing day, however she did not gloat about her magnificent achievements and actually loathed it when others pointed her out and considered her to be great. Still to this day if I walk down a hallway at school and if I think about her, I could visually see her next to me and watch how she moves, what she would say to others and what paths she would take around the school. She has her own personality and style and I would never interfere and try to change that. She changes herself as she pleases.

Now, for those of you who are reading this and believe what I am saying must be the result of smoking something, I suggest you stop now. Whoever has a creative spirit and can think out of the box should understand what I am trying to get across. Yes, it is true it came from your own imagination, but the character came out on it’s own will whether it be from boredom, stress, or a certain event, you did not make that character. You are the parent of your character (Mother or father, So treat your children well. From birth from a beautiful, pure idea. To the end of theiruse.

This is partially why I don’t like teachers that force you to write a story and it HAS to be due at a certain time. The character in your mind should not be forced to be born and grow in a week or so. You need time to figure out a character, to explore the possibilities and experience things with your character. If I was a teacher in an English or Art department I would start my students off with the personality of a character. From there you will understand what the character would wear, what they look like, how they walk and so on. Knowing the personality of your character can also help figure out a history. Why do they act the way they do? What events molded them into that character? Personality is the single and most important thing to establishing your character. This is your beginning, the beginning to your character, listen and your character will tell you who they are then you and your character can work things out and everything will eventually fold out before you.

Also, this is exactly why I do not believe in drawing fanart. My work comes from my heart. And so do others. To draw someone else's work makes me feel unsatisfied an even guilty. How could I possibly know who this character truly is? I never created it, how would I know what it's saying? Sure I watched the animes and know the personality, but that character is not mine, it belongs to the creator and should stay that way. I like looking at fanart that people can draw, but personally I do not approve of drawing it (with only a few exceptions).

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ!!!

:damphyr: Okay I really Didn't know what category to put this under, but I knew I had to post it because I firmly believe in my theory. I know this is long, but please if you have trouble making a charcter or are just plain intrested in how I create mine, please read. It might help you as it has with several students in my school. (I am graduated from there though! ^^ w00t!)

:damphyr: This will also explain why I do not draw fanart and why I am against it most the time. Please tell me what you think. Several people who have read this theory are now considering themselves "followers" and they are using the same philosophy in there stories and character building, please try.

A very insightful approach; I've used a similar method when creating characters for roleplays - one in particular, the Old Man, has thus far furiously resisted any attempt to force his personality into what I think might be a way of generating a new story - but I'm glad he has, for he has been consistantly voted one of the most popular characters of all time in the roleplays of myself and my friends. So now I'm going to branch out and try a story with him.
